Playgroups have concluded for the 2018-2019 Academic Year. Please check this space for information about our upcoming dates and locations.
We will be hosting summer pop-up playgroups!
What: An AFK Educator will select a location on the site that is conducive to group exploration and play. Our Educator will help the children set boundaries for group expectations, lead an opening circle, a break for snack, and a closing circle. The Educator will also be available to discuss with parents ideas for effectively encouraging independent play, nature exploration, and social-emotional development at home.
We encourage caregivers at AFK Playgroup to consider themselves observers more than playmates. When caregivers mindfully observe without intervention or instruction, your child's capabilities and interests may surprise you! It is also very special for children to have caregivers pay close attention to their play. Watching while neither participating or multi-tasking is a special gift of presence!
Who: AFK Playgroup is offered with a spirit of inclusivity and accessibility. The Playgroup is for children age 2-7 and their caregivers. Siblings under age 2 may attend for free.
When: AFK Playgroup is held every Wednesday 9:30-12:00 from September-April. We will offer occasional pop-up Playgroups through the summer, so be sure to follow us on Facebook and Instagram to find out! In the Fall of 2019 AFK Playgroup will start back and will meet on Fridays.
Where: AFK Playgroup is held at various locations in the Athens area. The locations are updated here and also added as a unique event on our Facebook page each week.
Why: Make friends, explore new places, deepen your relationship with the natural world, give children the gift of being in charge of their own experience, learn new ways of encouraging your child's development, and become part of the AFK Community!
How: Pre-register online or just show up ready to pay with cash or PayPal. Bring water and a snack. In the warmer months, please continue to dress your child in socks, closed toed shoes, and pants they can tuck inside their socks to protect against ticks.
What else should I know?
The drop-in cost is $10 for the first child. Siblings age 2 and up are $5 each. Babies under 2 are welcome to attend for free!
We may cancel due to severe weather, as not all sites have shelters and we know that parents, baby siblings, and occasional playgroup attendees may not have the necessary gear for all-weather play. If we do need to cancel, we will announce the decision by 7:00 am on our Facebook page and with a banner at the top of our website. If you pre-register, it will help us contact you with any scheduling changes!
If your child has a severe food allergy, or other special need please let us know on the enrollment forms or by direct message so that we can help ensure a safe experience for your child.
